In the center of the monolith is carved the face of Tonatiuh, known by the Aztecs as the fifth solar god, who was the leader of the sky. The monolith is arranged with a succession of concentric rings that have elements related to time, for example, it describes the duration of the months, the number of days that a year contained, and the duration of the Mexica centuries. So what is the Aztec Calendar if not a calendar?Īlthough La Piedra del Sol symbolizes the conception of time, it did not function as a calendar for the Mexica. ![]() In 1964 the sculpture left its place on Calle de la Moneda and was transferred to the Bosque de Chapultepec on a 16-meter platform, in a journey of one hour and 15 minutes, to be installed in the Museo Nacional de Antropología (National Museum of Anthropology), where it currently occupies the stellar place in the Sala Mexica. It was not until September 1887 when it was transferred to a closed, protected location: the Museo Nacional (National Museum) located on Calle de la Moneda, where it occupied the central place of the Monolith Gallery for 77 years. There, it could be admired by all, but it also had a huge deterioration from the elements and the people who would throw food scraps and trash at it, and even soldiers that would play bullseye, shooting at the center of the stone. During paving and leveling works that were carried out in the Plaza Mayor of Mexico City (what is now the Zócalo of the city), La Piedra del Sol was found at a depth of 1.3 ft from the ground, practically emerging by itself!Īfter its uncovering, it was moved to the outside of the Templo Mayor, where it was kept out in the open, with the relief facing out/upwards for many years. It remained underground until Decemwhen it returned to light by accident. This huge monolith remained in place until the arrival of the Spanish and the defeat of the Mexica empire, when in 1559 the stone was buried facing down, since the Spanish believed that the stone had been the work of the devil and exerted bad influence on the (indigenous) townspeople-as it happened with many other Mexica cultural and religious symbols. The total weight of the monolith is around 25 tons! It is believed that the stone comes from either the Pedregal de San Ángel or Xochimilco area, so it had to be transported from the south of Mexico City to the Templo Mayor in the central area 12 to 22 kilometers (7.5-13.5 miles). It is an impressive block of olivine volcanic basalt that measures 3.60 meters (11.8 ft) in diameter and is 122 centimeters (4 ft) thick. It is estimated that it was carved in 1479 and it is known that it occupied a prominent place in the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlán. La Piedra del Sol dates from the time of Tlatoani Axayácatl, the sixth Mexica ruler. Essentially, for the Mexica, this stone commemorates the time created and destroyed by the gods. ![]() This monolith is an unfinished piece, which has been confused with a calendar because in its circles we can find a clear disposition of time, movement of the stars, and cycles of months, as conceived by the Mexica culture. Although, not really a calendar as we know it today, this iconic monument synthesizes the astronomical knowledge that the Mexica society developed and the order under which they lived. Commonly known as the Aztec Calendar, La Piedra del Sol (Stone of the Sun) is one of the most representative pieces of the Mexica culture.

The forcing factor for Apple was the EU commission, who have passed legislation to reduce e-waste by enforcing USB-C as the universal connector for phones. Most corer/peelers slice the apple, too.Ī basic corer or corer/slicer works well if you just want to core an apple for a snack. When the apple is in place, you turn the handle to rotate the fruit and move it toward a peeling blade and a corer blade at the end of the tool to remove the skin and core in a single step. It features a long arm with metal prongs on the end that you press into the apple around the stem. To use a corer/slicer, you line up the smaller circle with the apple stem and push down on each handle to cut out the core and slice the apple into wedges. There’s a small bladed circle in the center, which is surrounded by blades that divide the circle into wedges. However, a corer/slicer features a different design: it’s a larger tool with handles on either side of a metal circle. These basic handheld corers typically require the most hand strength to use because you have to press the tool all the way through the fruit with one hand.Īn apple corer/slicer is similar to a basic corer in that it’s a handheld device that cuts through the fruit to take out a circular portion that contains the core while slicing the apple at the same time. You press the round, bladed edge through the center of the apple, and the corer cuts the center core portion of the apple out without removing too much of the fruit. Some corers perform other functions that make them a better option depending on whether you intend to eat your apple on its own as a snack or bake apples as part of a recipe.Ī basic apple corer is a thin, handheld tool that features a handle and a cylindrical tube with a bladed edge. Multislice CT angiography is an imaging modality that provides accurate information about the exact anatomical relations prior to the procedure. Poor catheter stability in the part of the CTI located in the functional RV could be one of the plausible explanations for the arrhythmia recurrence after the first ablation session. However, in this particular case they posed a problem for the ablation by necessitating RF lesions across the artificial valve to terminate the arrhythmia and establish bidirectional CTI block. These relations between the valve ring and the CTI are due to the specific surgical approach aimed at preventing postoperative conduction disturbances. The case presented in this report demonstrates a successfully ablated CTId AFL in a patient late after TVR for EA in whom a part of the CTI was located in the functional RV as shown by CT angiography and ICE. After a 30 min waiting period CTI block was still persistent and no arrhythmias were inducible with programmed atrial stimulation. This resulted in termination of the arrhythmia and subsequent bidirectional CTI block. Since the ventricular location of a part of the circuit was strongly suspected based on CT images, CARTO and entrainment from the CS os, lesions were delivered across the artificial valve ring, in the functional RV to complete the ablation line (Fig. Ablation lesions at the atrial side of the CTI did not terminate flutter. Based on these findings the patient was found to have clockwise CTId AFL and radiofrequency (RF) ablation was undertaken using a cooled tip ablation catheter. Entrainment from the part of the CTI that was situated on the atrial side of the prosthesis ring demonstrated PPI-TCL of 20 msec (Fig. Pacing from the CSos produced a PPI-TCL of 0 msec demonstrating that it was also a part of the circuit despite its location in the functional RV. Entrainment mapping at the lateral and anterior TA showed postpacing intervals minus tachycardia CL (PPI-TCL) differences of 20 msec or less signifying that those sites were within the circuit. The activation map clearly showed clockwise activation around the TA occupying the whole CL of the AFL which was strongly suggestive of a peritricuspid reentrant circuit (Fig. An electroanatomic mapping system (CARTO, Biosense Webster, Diamond Bar, CA, USA) was used to map the RA. The patient presented in AFl and intracardiac recordings suggested clockwise activation around the tricuspid annulus (TA) with a cycle length (CL) of 260 msec. A part of the CTI was also found to be situated subvalvularly (Fig. The CS ostium (CSos) was found to be situated on the ventricular side of the prosthesis ring with a dilated CS draining into the right ventricle (RV) (Fig. Prior to the procedure a multislice contrast-enhanced computed-tomographic (CT) angiography was carried out to visualize the exact anatomical relations between the prosthesis ring and the other structures of the right atrium (RA). She was referred to our institution because of persistent symptomatic atrial flutter and was scheduled for ablation. During both operations, the prosthesis ring had been sutured to the septum posteriorly, well above the AV node, in order to avoid injury to it, thus leaving the coronary sinus (CS) draining into the right ventricle. In 2002 she was reoperated for a symptomatic tricuspid stenosis and the prosthesis was replaced by another bioprosthesis following a right lateral atriotomy. A 41 year old female had undergone a TVR with a biological artificial valve in 1983 without atrial plication because of EA with a severe tricuspid regurgitation. |
